What’s the Deal About Sylvia Plath?
After she killed herself in January 1963, Sylvia Plath became an icon for the emerging women’s movement of the rebellious 1960s. The politicization of Plath’s life made her famous and opened up her work to generations of young women who followed. Now, nearly a half-century has passed since her suicide. Perhaps it is time to look at her work from a more objective point of view.

Who Cares About Olive Higgins Prouty?
In Sylvia Plath’s autobiographical novel The Bell Jar, one of the characters, Philomena Guinea, is based on Plath’s benefactress Olive Higgins Prouty. Plath belittles Guinea personally and ridicules her novels. Several of Plath’s biographers have echoed her opinion of Prouty’s writing style. After actually reading Prouty’s novels, we have come to a different conclusion.
