Charles Dickens Bicentenary, 1812-2012
The “Gold Medal Event” in London in 2012 was the Thirtieth Olympiad, but Charles Dickens confidently took the silver with Bicentenary exhibitions, events and publications galore. The premier novelist of the Industrial Age is now an industry unto himself.

From the Trenches to the Moon:
Hugh Lofting and Dr. Dolittle

Serving in the trenches during World War One, Hugh Lofting wrote letters home to his children. He could not send them realistic reports of the horrors he experienced, so he wrote fanciful accounts of the animals that were subjected to the same dangers as human beings. Eventually, Lofting dreamed up a doctor who could talk to those animals.
