At the approach of mid-century, Burnett was reaching his peak. He had 15 published novels to his credit, one of which, Little Caesar, initiated the modern psychological gangster subgenre. Although he always considered himself a novelist, he was among Hollywood’s elite screenwriters. The most productive decade of his career was still ahead of him.

At the beginning of his career, Burnett shied away from writing screenplays. although many of his novels and stories were adapted into films. From early 1940s on, Burnett wrote many screenplays—often in collaboration—including those for the classics High Sierra, Wake Island and The Great Escape.
