Philip Kerr: Berlin Noir Was Just the Beginning
Philip Kerr did not have to wait long for success. His first three novels about Bernie Gunther, a private eye in Hitler’s Germany (of all places!), became classics when published in an omnibus edition entitled Berlin Noir. Kerr seemingly turned his back on Gunther, writing stand-alone books until he returned to the Gunther series after a lapse of 15 years.
Philip Kerr: The Bernie Gunther Series, An Annotated Checklist of First Editions
When Kerr returned to the series he came back with a vengeance, writing 11 more entries spanning Gunther’s career from 1928 to 1957. Some of these books are elusive, as are the notoriously difficult-to-find first three.
Philip Kerr’s Scott Manson Series and Stand-alone Books for Adults
In the long pause between Gunthers Kerr kept more than busy, writing thrillers and speculative fiction, and even editing a couple of anthologies. After returning to Bernie the author still found time to write the soccer-centric Scott Manson novels.
Philip Kerr’s Books for Young Readers
His young adult fantasy series The Children of the Lamp rivals the Gunther books in popularity.
The Novels of Jane Thynne: Telling the Women’s Story
Jane Thynne, wife of the late Philip Kerr, is a novelist whose Clara Vine series is set in 1930s Berlin. Notable for their historical accuracy, they have a large following of their own.
