Aliens, Imposters, Anti-heroes: Collecting Walter Tevis

Despite, or perhaps because of, his childhood experiences, Tevis emerged first as a teacher and then as a novelist, author of the great pool novel The Hustler, the sci-fi fantasy The Man Who Fell to Earth, and the best novel ever written about chess, The Queen’s Gambit. Even so, he thought his best writing was found in his short stories.

Walter Tevis: An Annotated Checklist of First Editions

Tevis’ books have gradually achieved classic status, and as such have become more difficult to find in collector’s condition and when found, increasingly pricey.

The Case of the Vanishing Thrillers

In 1944 Publisher’s Weekly described a forthcoming series: “Knopf has just announced that…it will issue the first three volumes in a new series of Borzoi reprints to be called The Black Widow Thrillers.” These were Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep and Eric Ambler’s A Coffin for Dimitrios. What’s the problem? Couldn’t they find any good titles?
