Some Tough Noirs
The vast majority of films made during the time that has become known as the “noir” cycle were based on novels, short stories and plays. Good film vehicles were dependent on good stories, and they came together in a new way. There was a place in the sun for dark, brooding movies that, like the books that spawned them, had complex characters and unhappy endings.

Collecting Horace McCoy
Along with Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, Horace McCoy was a “Black Mask boy.” During his career, he not only wrote short fiction, but also five novels, the first of which, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, has achieved classic status.

Golf Mysteries
The game is tough enough on its own. Fighting a duck hook or attempting a six-foot downhill putt can be frightening experiences, and have drained many a weekend player of dignity and self-esteem. Do we have to add murder and mayhem to the mix? Sure. Why not? At least these mysteries are solved in the end.

Books into Film
I Wake Up Screaming, a novel by Steve Fisher, a film by H. Bruce Humberstone.
